4 Tips to Cat-Proof Your Home

It's important to ensure your cat is safe when you bring them home for the first time. Everyday household objects, from scissors to wine glasses, can pose a risk if not put away. Here are four tips you can use to cat-proof your home:

1. Keep candles out of reach

Cats often jump on tables, and they could end up accidentally knocking over your candles. To prevent a fire, try flameless candles instead, to create a similar atmosphere without the danger.

2. Research plants before you place them indoors

Many plants are toxic to cats, including sago palms and daffodils. Remember to contact your veterinarian if you are unsure if a plant is safe to have around your pet. If you want a plant that is considered toxic, look into artificial alternatives.

3. Clear countertops

Remove any medicine or supplement bottles, strings, sewing equipment, and small objects that can be chewed and swallowed. If there are any glass containers, be sure they are secured so they can't be knocked to the ground.

4. Cover the trashcan

Your cat could get sick if they try to tip over the trash to reach last night's dinner, and if there are any bones, they could pose a choking hazard. To prevent this, try to pick heavier, stable trashcans that are covered.

Adopting a new cat can be exciting, but you need to make sure they have a safe environment to come home to. If you follow these simple tips, both you and your cat will be able to settle in and explore while staying secure!
