Did you know that your cosmetics and personal care products may contain dangerous chemicals and toxins? The eyeshadows, foundations, and lipsticks we typically use without a second thought might be putting you at risk for neurological problems, reproductive issues, and even cancer. Three of the most common dangers in these products include sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. These substances may cause severe short and long-term health issues. Fortunately, there are safer options for your beauty routine.
Sulfates
Sulfates are used in “cleansing” products such as shampoo, hand soap, and facial cleansers. Sulfates allow these products to build up a “lather.” Sulfates have been linked to skin irritation, cancer, and neurological problems.
Parabens
Parabens are used as preservatives. Preservatives help a product to last longer and increase its shelf life. However, parabens can enter the bloodstream through the skin. They mimic estrogen, which can lead to hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues.
Phthalates
Phthalates are used in products such as nail polish to prevent cracking and hair styling products such as hairspray. They have been shown to cause lung damage and interfere with kidney and liver function.
It is cheaper for companies to use compounds such as sulfates, parabens, and phthalates in their products rather than provide natural alternatives. For example, although parabens are toxic, companies usually opt to use them as preservatives. If they do not, they would have to make smaller batches of the product which costs more money. Adding preservatives allows companies to mass-produce their products which equates to higher profit margins.
To avoid these toxins in your home, seek out natural products from companies that offer clean alternatives. Avoid sulfates, parabens, phthalates, dyes, and fragrances derived from unnatural sources. While natural products may be more expensive, they come without the added risk to your long-term health.
