Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice originating from India. Oil pulling has been around for thousands of years but has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is believed that the practice will draw toxins from the body and provide several health benefits.
Partaking in the practice of oil pulling is quite simple. An adult will take one tablespoon of oil in their mouth and swish it around for approximately twenty minutes before spitting it out. It is important to move it all around in the mouth and in between all of your teeth. It is generally recommended to do this first thing in the morning before consuming any food.
Coconut oil is highly recommended for this practice; however, sesame oil or sunflower oil may also be used.
Oil pulling may provide many oral health benefits, including the prevention of cavities and tooth decay. It fights bacteria and bad breath. Oil pulling may also reduce inflammation in the gums and help to prevent gum disease.
Oil pulling can be intimidating for beginners. It is important to note that even a shorter amount of time spent oil pulling may provide some benefit. Beginners may choose to start at five minutes and work their way up to the full twenty minutes. New oil pullers may also choose to swish with a smaller amount of oil at first and work up to a full tablespoon.
There are no restrictions as to who can benefit from the practice of oil pulling, and there are no known adverse effects. If oil pulling is performed regularly, it has been shown to provide many health benefits.
