6 Tools You Need Before Hanging Your TV

Television wall mounts are a great way to add a pleasant redesign to your living room entertainment system. Mounts are affordable, easy to purchase online, and offer many viewing opportunities other than putting the tv on a stand. But before you click on that "Buy" button, make sure you have the right tools for the job, as being prepared will save you a lot of trouble from having to touch up your damaged walls. Remember, go over your project list twice so you only have to buy once!

1. Screwdriver and Electric Screwdriver/Drill

Having both a manual screwdriver (an eight-in-one set) and an electric one is great to have in your toolset. While many opt for only the electric screwdriver, using the old hand turn screwdriver is good for making sure you do not strip a screw and ensure the screw goes evenly into the TV mounting bracket or wall. Once the screw is started, an electric screwdriver can finish the job with ease, and multi-use power tools can be used for drilling holes when needed.

2. Measuring Tape

A good measuring tape will go a long way. Having a twenty-five-foot or thirty-foot measuring tape is a good investment for larger rooms where a study tape is useful.

3. Carpenters Pencil or Painters Tape

To help mark out the layout of the TV mount and the dimensions of the television, having a carpenter's pencil is great for all wall surfaces regardless of material. Alternatively, if you desire to not leave any marks on the wall, painter's tape is great for leaving no marks behind, and it can even be written on for height and width measurements.

4. Stud Finder or Magnet

A stud finder works wonders in making sure you do not poke too many holes into your lovely house, and some models can help detect wiring and pipes. For a low-cost option, a magnet is the simplest alternative. A relatively strong magnet can be bought from hardware stores or online and can find the nails in the studs, which is useful for double-checking the stud finder.

5. Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts, also called butterfly anchors, are useful when studs are too far apart or the mount cannot align to the studs for the desired mounting location. These bolts help hold fixtures by distributing the weight on a larger surface area of the drywall. To use, drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the toggle bolt, then place it directly into the wall before screwing the bolt.

6. Torpedo Level

Any level will be useful to keep your TV mount set up looking professional. Small levels are cheap and easy to carry around. Levels with magnets are particularly helpful to attach to mounts before making finishing adjustments and tightening all screws.
