7 Tips for Managing Pregnancy Fatigue

Feeling fatigued is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy. Pregnancy is like a marathon, a forty-week long one. When you are limited to a small coffee a day and no more energy drinks, try some of the following tips to help manage pregnancy fatigue.

Eat a balanced diet

While it sounds cliche, eating a healthy and balanced diet goes a long way during pregnancy. Your body is creating another human being. You need the calories and nutrients. Many women feel nauseated during the first trimester. It is time to get creative with recipes. If you crave fruits, try making a fruit smoothie with milk and nuts. This way you can get some proteins, minerals, and fatty acids all within one refreshing serving of smoothie.

Get your blood work done

Pregnant women are more likely to be anemic, and anemia may cause fatigue. It is important to check your blood count. A slightly low blood count is usually normal. If you are anemic, discuss with your prenatal care provider. Further tests may be ordered to find out the causes of your anemia. For example, if you have iron deficiency, you may be told to take an iron supplement.

Change your prenatal vitamins

Although most prenatal vitamins contain almost the same list of ingredients, some may work better for you. The formula and ratios of the ingredients may be the key. Try a few over-the-counter brands and ask your doctor about prescription options.

Try different exercises

It is recommended that most pregnant women keep up with 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day. You may feel tired and want to skip a day, but exercising actually boosts your energy. Some women like prenatal yoga. Some say swimming is the best in relieving body aches. Your body will know what works for you.

Keep up with your daily routine

Pregnancy fatigue is partially caused by mental exhaustion. It is tiring constantly thinking about being pregnant. Keeping up with your daily routine provides a good distraction. It is normal to want to overreact, but as much as possible, try not to worry about pregnancy too much.

Use a belly support belt

Later in the pregnancy, the growing bump adds real weight to your body. When you carry 20 pounds of extra weight all day long, you will be tired. A belly support belt can help. Although you are still the one carrying the weight, the belt can help distribute the load more evenly so there is less muscle strain.

Take naps

Some pregnant women suffer from insomnia. Not getting enough sleep will contribute to your fatigue. If you feel tired during the day, taking a nap is not a bad idea. Getting some rest is better than nothing, especially if you have a hard time falling and staying asleep at night.
