An epidural is referred to as a local anesthetic that is injected into the spinal region to numb the pain when a woman is in labor. A C-Section is when a surgeon makes an incision along the abdomen and removes the baby without the mother needing to push the child out. At first glance, taking an epidural or a C-Section would seem like the best route to avoid any pain from delivering a baby. However, there are many reasons why a natural childbirth is beneficial for both mother and child.
Baby's Health
A baby can have breathing problems whenever delivered by C-Section because they aren't squeezed out of the birth canal. When a baby is pushed through vaginally, any extra fluids are pushed out of the lungs. This can lead to a child having asthma in the future. There is always that chance of a baby getting cut during the incision. If the gestational age is not appropriately calculated, the baby can be premature in its growth. Since epidurals lower the mother's blood pressure, the baby's heart rate can be affected as well.
Mother's Health
If a woman commits to a C-Section, they can get an infection when getting an incision. There is a substantial amount more blood loss when going through this procedure. Too much blood loss can lead to extended hospital stays or even death. An epidural can cause nerve damage or seizures.
There are many reasons why it may be a better option for a woman to deliver with the influence of an epidural or through C-Section, as we can see. Although these two alternatives will lessen pain and prevent what can be long grueling labor, it is best to weigh out the options and consider the long-term side effects.
