Prepping Your Pet for Travel

If you're like most pet parents, your furry friend is part of the family—which means they probably tag along on all your adventures, big and small. Traveling with a pet can be a bit of a challenge, but with a little preparation (and maybe a few extra treats), it can be smooth sailing for everyone involved. Here are a few tips to help you prep your pet for travel.

1. Get them used to their carrier

If you're going to be traveling by airplane, chances are your pet will need to ride in a carrier. Get them familiar with the carrier well in advance of your trip so they don't associate it with being cooped up on a plane. Leave it out in the open and let them explore it at their own pace. You can even put some of their favorite toys or blankets inside to make it more comfortable.

2. Make sure they're up-to-date on their vaccinations

This is especially important if you'll be traveling internationally, as some countries have very strict entry requirements when it comes to pets. Make an appointment with your veterinarian to make sure all their vaccinations are up-to-date and that they're healthy enough for travel.

3. Create a packing list

Just like you would for yourself, make a packing list for your pet that includes everything they'll need while you're gone—food, water, toys, bedding, etc. This will help ensure you don't forget anything important (or that they have a good time while you're away). Think about your pet's needs while on the road. Bring along enough food and water for the trip, as well as any medications they may be taking. It's also a good idea to have a list of local veterinarians in case of an emergency.

Traveling with your pet can be enjoyable for both of you if you take the time to prepare ahead of time. It doesn't have to be stressful! By following these tips, you can help ensure that your furry friend has a safe and comfortable journey.
